Tiger Woods is at Chambers Bay… Think he wants to win?

Earlier this week Tiger’s plane was spotted at Chambers Bay. What is Chambers Bay, you ask? Chambers Bay is a golf course in University Place, Washington, just outside of Seattle. Tiger hasn’t won a major in several years, and Chambers Bay is hosting the 115th U.S. Open Championship later this month. Looks like Tiger is doing whatever it takes to compete this year.

Tiger hasn’t won a major since 2008 when he won the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course. Remember that tournament? He beat Rocco Mediate on a broken leg. No, seriously. His leg was literally broken. Anyway, Tiger has been at Chambers Bay for a couple of days now, and spent several hours making his way around the golf course. Matt Ginella was there today, actually, and was sharing some of Tiger’s practice round on Periscope. Matt was talking to some locals watching Tiger practice, and from what I was hearing, Tiger is hitting the ball well, isn’t hurt, and looks ready to win.

But will he win? Every time Tiger plays people ask, “Is he back?” Where did he go? I mean… It’s been a long time since he won a major, but a lot has happened since then. I won’t go into details about his personal life, but Tiger is finally healthy. He looked good at Augusta and is headed to Muirfield Village Golf Club for the Memorial Tournament later this week. I just told Sheryl, “If Tiger is in contention this weekend, our plans change on Sunday.” Ha!

His next major is coming. He knows it, too. But do you think he can get it done at Chambers Bay? I hope so!

Rory McIlroy: What’s in the bag?

That was fun. When Tiger missed the cut, I didn’t think I would care much about the PGA Championship. It was sad Tiger missing the cut, too, because the last time this event was at Valhalla Golf Club, I was there. In 2000 Tiger battled Bob May in a playoff, and I was there the entire time. I was actually a volunteer that week, and spent Sunday just walking around following Tiger. I wasn’t in Louisville this year, but Tiger played like crap and didn’t make the cut. I actually played golf this weekend, playing The Phoencian on Saturday and Las Sendas Golf Club on Sunday. We teed off early on Sunday, so I was able to make it home in time to see the final few holes.

Phil Mickelson was there. Rickie Fowler, too. Heck, even Ernie Els made a run at it. But it was Rory McIlroy that was able to seal the deal on Sunday night. It was dark when he finished… It didn’t appear that way on TV, but trust me. It was dark. Anyway, Rory had a two shot lead, and would end up making par from a greenside bunker to win. I was pulling for Rickie… Not because we have the same name (even though he spells it wrong) but because he played so well this year in the majors. Granted, Rory won the last two, but Rickie finished in the top five in all four majors this year. It is only a matter of time before he wins one.

Even though Tiger missed the cut, I am sure the guys over at Nike are all smiles. I mean, Rory has won three events in a row, including two major championships. He has done it playing Nike golf clubs, wearing Nike shirts, hats, belts and shoes… He was probably wearing Nike socks. He is Nike from head to toe. Here is a complete list of what Rory was playing on Sunday:

Driver: Nike VRS Covert 2.0 Tour (Mitsubishi Kuro Kage XTS 70x), 8.5°
3-wood: Nike VRS Covert 2.0, 15°
5-wood: Nike VRS Covert, 19°
Irons (4-9): Nike VR Pro Blade; (PW): Nike VR Forged
Wedges: Nike VR Forged (52°, 56°, 59°)
Putter: Nike Method 006
Ball: Nike RZN Black

I told you he was Nike from head to toe. What is next for Rory? Chances are a lot of birdies and more wins. Rory has already won four major championships and he is only 25 years old. The sky is the limit for this kid, and he makes golf exciting. Not as exciting as Tiger… But I need someone to root for.

Do you really care what Rory is wearing? I do!

The PGA Championship is this week at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky. This event means a lot to me, as I was there when Tiger won the PGA Championship beating Bob May in a playoff. Funny story… My arm is on the cover of Sports Illustrated. I will save that story for another blog post. Anyway, the PGA Championship is this week. As of writing this blog post, I am not even sure Tiger is playing. Again… Another blog post. I am more concerned with what Rory McIlroy and Jason Day will be wearing this week. I am talking about apparel scripts!

Tony Korologos writes for Hooked On Golf Blog, and is active in the Google+ golf community. He likes to make fun of these… But I like them. I mean, imagine being on TOUR and having someone pick out what you are going to wear for the week. You don’t have to worry about it! This week Rory will be wearing grey pants on Thursday, white pants and a yellow billed hat on Thursday, and a white hat, white pants… White belt on Sunday! Man, I LOVE the white belt. Anyway, I think it is really cool to see what guys are going to be wearing during the week.

Look. Here is what Rory is wearing this week.

Rory McIlroy

I like watching reality TV shows on Netflix. Maybe someone should produce a reality TV show called “Life On Tour” and feature guys like Rory and Tiger and what their life is like on TOUR. From getting to and from the hotel to what they wear and their clubs showing up on time… The logistics are incredible. Earlier this year, during the Waste Management Phoenix Open I saw Justin Leonard at Whole Foods. He was on the phone, but I held the door open for him. He was wearing a green shirt. I wonder if that was on his apparel script. Ha!

What are your thoughts on these? Do you like knowing what golfers are going to be wearing every week?

Michelle Wie: What’s In Her Bag?

Michelle Wie

Michelle Wie played a calm, composed, controlled game of golf at the first LPGA major of the 2014 season, the Kraft Nabisco Championship. Wie looked like a champion and she played like a champion, only to watch her friend and competitor Lexi Thompson roll in birdie butts while her own ball inched by the right edge of the cup.

The teen phenom of 2005 is now grown into a stunningly beautiful woman who plays golf with the grace and focus of a panther on the prowl.  Although winless since her victory at the 2010 Canadian Pacific Women’s Open, Wie’s played on the last 3 Solheim Cup US teams and she was one of the few shining stars on the 2013 American team.

Lexi Thompson may have taken the leap into Poppy’s Pond at the Kraft Nabisco with Michelle looking on, but Wie’s had 3 top-10 finishes this season and she’s on the prowl for a win.  I’d put money on it.

What’s Michelle Wie using to play that stunning game she plays?

Driver: VR_S Covert Tour 2.0 Driver
Fairway Wood: VR_S Covert Tour Fairway Woods
Hybrid: Nike VR_S Covert 18-degree
Irons: VR Pro Blade Irons
Wedges: VR Forged Wedges
Putter: Method 006 Putter
Ball: RZN Black

What’s In My Bag: Tiger Woods

Tiger isn’t playing this week, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t making news. There is still a lot of talk about his “illegal” drops at the 2013 Masters Tournament and at the 2013 THE PLAYERS Championship last week. He didn’t win the Masters this year, but he DID win THE PLAYERS. Tiger now has 78 PGA TOUR wins, just four shy of Sam Snead’s record. The way Tiger is playing this year, he might break that record this year! Tiger is at home this week resting, but what was he playing during THE PLAYERS? Check out what was in his bag last week.

Ball: Nike One Tour D
Driver: Nike VR Tour with Mitsubishi Diamana White Board 73X (9.5 degrees)
3-wood: Nike VR_S Covert (15 degrees)
5-wood: Nike VR_S Covert (19 degrees)
Irons (3-PW): Nike VR Pro Blade
Wedges: Nike VR Pro (56, 60 degrees)
Putter: Nike Method 001

Tiger is all Nike, but uses a PING grip on his putter. He always has, and he always will. Next time you see Tiger on TV, look at his grip. That is OLD school right there! According to E. Michael Johnson, earlier this year Tiger switched to Nike’s VR_S Covert 5-wood and added the 3-wood at the Masters. He used both of those off the tee all week at THE PLAYERS. He should just leave the driver in the hotel room… he hits the 3-wood like a champ. Glad to see Tiger holding the trophy on Sunday afternoon. He is hitting the ball great, has good control with his short irons and wedges, and is putting better than anyone on TOUR. Safe to say Tiger’s “back”?
