Girl-Watching and the LPGA

I’ve long suspected that a lot of guys who are LPGA fans are really just looking at girls, not golfers. That suspicion got confirmed when I ran across LPGA Tour Beauties. Really? Swimsuits? Pettersen in the buff?  Glammed up gams in Singapore? Anna Rawson stroking the shaft of her driver? And all this is somehow related to the game of golf, how?

If you haven’t already clicked on the link and you’re still reading, just hold on. Let me finish before you go ogle the girls. We all know there’s a huge disparity between men’s pro golf winnings and women’s. But that disparity’s only in part driving the sexual commoditization in those photos. To be sure, some photos are more eroticized than others, and all were shot with the consent of the women involved. But not all swimsuit photos are sexualized.  Take a look at this feature from Golf Channel.

Golfers, men and women, supplement their tournament winnings with corporate sponsorships. Nothing wrong with that. They get paid for endorsements. Nothing wrong with that. Of course golfers, women as well as men, have great bodies. They’re professional athletes. And great bodies are sexy. They don’t need to be commoditized.
