Gold Canyon Golf Resort: Dinosaur Mountain

dinoscreenshot2Wes and I so thoroughly enjoyed our round on Gold Canyon Resort’s Sidewinder track that we went back for a second round on the Dinosaur Mountain course.  It was an equally delightful and yet completely different golfing experience.

The Sidewinder track took us along the desert floor, across arroyos, around cacti, keeping company with the small critters that make the desert their home.

Dinosaur Mountain winds its way through the high Sonoran desert up and around and through the Superstition Mountains.  With those mountains as a constantly shifting backdrop, the views are simply breathtaking.  For a time we kept company with a pair of eagles and we spotted a very sleek and well-fed coyote making his way through the brush behind the tee box on the 5th hole.

The terrain and dramatic tee-to-green elevation changes present opportunities to hit some spectacular tee shots.  Gold Canyon Resort claims that #3, #4 and #5 are the Dinosaur Mountain signature holes but my favorite came on the par-4 15th hole, when I faced two options for my tee shot, neither of them immediately appealing.

The first option was a short tee shot down into a fairway that would then require me to hit across a span of thick vegetation but would leave me with a long uphill 3rd shot to a well-protected green.  I could smell a double bogey and I was 1 up at that point with another bogey golfer.

The second option was a long tee shot across that same span of vegetation onto a fairway that sloped dramatically to my right.  But the carry distance seemed intimidating.  Wes checked the carry on the cart’s GPS — a very handy device with a number of unique features — and encouraged me to take the second option.

“You can do this, Mom, just line up the ball and spank it!”

I lined up the ball and with all the force I could muster from my septuagenerian body I spanked that ball and watched as it flew, over and well beyond the intimidating brush and then rolling to a perfectly set-up 2nd shot to the green.   I parred the hole and so did Wes, so I held on to my lead!

The 15th hole is an experience I’ll remember for a long time.

Don’t miss playing this track.  In addition to superbly groomed fairways and greens, Gold Canyon Resort provides all the amenities we needed — an efficient bag drop, a frequently appearing drink cart, a turn shop with delicious blueberry muffins, and a very well-tuned pace of play.
