Two legends of the game are teeing it up this week in Savannah, Georgia. Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus will be playing in the Liberty Mutual Insurance Legends of Golf. I told you they were legends! Think about this stat for a second… Jack made 584 starts on the PGA TOUR and some 84 starts on the Champions Tour. In all of those starts, he has never played in Savannah, Georgia.
“I have no history of playing in Savannah, and I have no expectations,” Nicklaus said during Masters week, prior to joining Player and Arnold Palmer for the ceremonial opening tee shot.
Last year, Gary Player was paired with Bob Charles, another legend of the game. Unfortunately Charles was unable to make it, and Player asked Simon Hobday to play. Jack took offense, and said, “I wish you’d asked me. I would love to play with you.” This year, his wish will come true. Player and Nickalus teed off at 11:10 AM EST today.
The event is a team event, and Mike Hill and Lee Trevino will be joining Gary and Jack today. There are also a lot of other big names in the field including Jim Dent, Butch Baird, Jack Fleck, Bob Toiski, Doug Ford, and many more.
“I’m very happy to play with Jack,” Player said. “Obviously we’ve gone up together and have a lot of respect for each other, but I’m not doing it for fun. I want to win.”
