The Case of Kevin Na: Why Tolerate Hecklers?

search-1Yes, Kevin Na is guilty of slow play. For whatever reason, Na wiggles and waggles excessively, lingers too long, can’t seem to keep up the pace. It’s not a new problem and it’s not a particularly unusual one. Just spend a Sunday afternoon on any golf course.

His pace of play isn’t really the point here. What’s at issue is how fans are responding to his wiggling and waggling and lingering and how those inappropriate fan responses are being managed by tournament officials.

Heckling is a form of bullying, and there’s no place for bullying in the game of golf. Like any victim of bullying, Na’s tried to ignore it and, when that didn’t work and Na had lost is game focus, he rightly asked for help.

Na should never have been put in the position of needing to appeal to tournament officials today at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, or at THE PLAYERS Championship, any other event. This is a behavior that simply shouldn’t be permitted. Offenders should be summarily evicted from the event and banned from future events. Let’s not debate this. Let’s take action!
